To actress Emmanuelle Chriqui time is a mystery. “On the one hand, as the seconds and minutes go by without us noticing, we wonder where they went; on the other hand, we have the consciousness that time is slipping by so quickly. This resonates with me in the deepest sense. It is bittersweet.” With delicate features and that infectious smile, Chriqui has charmed audiences in her roles in Entourage, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, and The Mentalist. Currently she has two movies in the works, A Short History of Decay and Omphalos, due out this fall.

A longtime fan of Baume & Mercier and friend of the brand, Chriqui recently embarked on a project to help design specially made watch straps—known for their easy interchangeability and versatility—for its women’s Linea line. Chriqui admits that she has been enamored of watches since she was young.

“My father, who is my hero, had a nice collection, and I inherited my love of timepieces from him,” says Chriqui, who received her very first watch from her father at the age of 14. “It may not have been what he would have chosen for me, but it was what I wanted: a big, clunky men’s two-timezone watch!”

Chriqui says she loved working on designing the new interchangeable straps for Baume & Mercier. Her synergy with the brand has been ongoing since she visited Geneva at SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) two years ago for the launch of its Seaside Living campaign and the then-new Hampton watch collection.

“I was thrilled when they asked if I would like to collaborate on a piece. I visited the factory and spent several days with them talking about my design preferences, and it seemed natural to create a new strap for the Linea line. I said I thought it would be fun to incorporate texture into the look. Having a braided or woven strap is a nice juxtaposition of hard and soft. It’s cool and classic at the same time.”

With homes in both LA and New York, Chriqui travels often. “Being bi-coastal is such a welcome adventure because I love both cities so much.” In Los Angeles, she enjoys weekend mornings the most: “My favorite thing to do in LA is wake up on a beautiful Sunday and get brunch at either Café Gratitude or M Café, followed by a stroll along Larchmont; I check out the farmers market and then see where the day leads. I love having no plans!”

As Sloan, she played the love interest on HBO’s rabidly popular Entourage, and now she portrays Lorelei on The Mentalist. In her free time, actress Emmanuelle Chriqui is an environmental activist: She helps plant school gardens in low-income neighborhoods, takes life-changing trips to places like Africa, and, since 2007, has helped run the Environmental Media Association, which promotes eco-efforts in the entertainment industry. Read on to find out how her path toward greenness was paved with persistent throat infections and homemade apple tarts.

What made you get
involved with the Environmental Media Association?

Years ago, I was shopping for a new car and was excited about the Prius. Someone put me in touch with Debbie Levin, the president of EMA. We hit it off famously. She saw my inclination toward living a natural life and asked if I’d be interested in joining. I’d already started doing stuff
that was important to me on my own, but the association is amazing because it
uses the media to create awareness. I was coming off Entourage, and there was sort of a lot of heat at that time, so I
thought I could add something. I’ve been working with them ever since.

What was it like to host their 2011 awards ceremony?

Just a ton of fun. And so amazing to see what a movement has
been created—that there’s really a consciousness rising. It was nice to honor
all those people who want to be green on their productions. It’s such a
cool event, and the fair after is amazing. 

There’s
a fair after?

Yeah. Maybe “fair” isn’t the right word, but there are food stands and products and all this stuff that’s natural
and organic. It just grows and grows every year.

You mentioned Debbie Levin, but who else in the
organization has inspired you?

Amy Smart. She’s a full-on environmental activist. Some people just have a passion to spread the word, and she’s one of them. 

What were those green things you were already doing on your own?

There was a series of events that
occurred. About 10 years back, I was getting frequent throat infections, and it
was really starting to affect my life. I saw a kinesiologist, who told me I was having a terrible time absorbing vitamins because of the water we drink—the chlorine and all the stuff in it. From that,
I developed a hyperconsciousness about water. Also, I’ve always eaten organic food and done the small things you can do at home, like recycling.

Before the health
issue, was there something else that influenced your thinking about environmentalism?

It started in how I grew up. My mom had a beautiful garden and always made everything from scratch. We didn’t have packaged foods. We had a salad every night with dinner, and dessert was fruit or maybe a homemade apple tart. Also, watching An Inconvenient Truth just floored me. I was like, “Oh, hell no. I am not sitting back.”

Is the
entertainment industry getting any greener?

I don’t know if you’ve ever been on a film set, but imagine all
the people it takes, the amount of paper and resources and
electricity that are being used in ways you can’t possibly fathom. Some production companies are really aware and are, say, trying to
do revisions by email so that they’re not printing all this paper. Some are using refillable water stations instead of having plastic water bottles everywhere.
They don’t let the generators run uselessly. When you
think of all the productions that there are, it makes a major dent. So yeah,
the big powers that be are definitely catching on.

In addition to
production practices, is the content of film and TV changing toward the more
environmental?

Definitely. When you’re watching a family sitcom and
the dad’s going off to work, he’s in a Prius. That messaging is hitting the audience. And the more it’s
integrated into the script, the bigger the impact. The media has truly become everything. We’re bombarded with
it. So it’s great if environmental messages can be incorporated.

Have you been in shows or films with an environmental message? Do you plan to be?

I can’t say that there’s been anything that stands out. Of course, if the opportunity comes up, yeah, that would be amazing. If I
get the opportunity to produce something, I’d say, “Let’s make this production
as green as possible.”

Do you ever say that to
people?

It’s hard when you’re just an actor coming onto something
that’s already been established. You can do your part, like bringing your own
refillable bottle or refusing to use Styrofoam. But it’s hard to
just show up and be like, “Alright, gang. Let’s be green.” Then they’re like,
“Uh, who’s the freak show?” 

Were there any green measures on the Entourage set?

Yeah, there was definitely
an awareness. At lunch there was always cutlery and porcelain plates.
Part of it was because Adrian Grenier is super green and a giant activist.
One year, for wrap gifts, he got everybody energy-efficient light
bulbs. He’s full-on. It’s kind of awesome.

You’re a big proponent of school gardens. Why do you have a passion for that?

It’s a shame that the less fortunate have no access to any kind of healthy way of being. And the education of it just isn’t there. So a garden is an amazing way to teach these kids the importance of the outdoors, of the fact that it’s important to eat fruits and vegetables. There’s a real pride when they’re growing their garden—and it teaches them all things: If you’re planting a garden, you’re learning science, math, geography. It’s such a brilliant idea that I hope ends up serving kids all over America, regardless of whether they’re rich or poor. 

Do you have a favorite object that has a connection to the environment?

I have
this amazing quartz that I found in Kenya. It was in the ground. On one side, it’s white crystal quartz, and
on the back, it’s dyed with that red earth. It’s really powerful. When I look at it, I think of
Africa.  

Most women in your
shoes would take contracts with big-name beauty companies like CoverGirl
and L’Oreal. How did you come to be a spokesperson
for Mineral Fusion?

It’s an amazing product, and something I use daily. When it comes to endorsement, I have a strong inclination to represent something I believe in, something that’s in line with who
I want to be. My dream is that one day, Mineral
Fusion or a company like it becomes mainstream. Having said that, I also use non-natural makeup for work. There are just some things that
deliver better for the camera. 

Would you consider a contract with CoverGirl
or L’Oreal if they came knocking?

I’d never say never to a big-money contract. I think about what I could do with that
kind of money. I could go and build 20 water wells in Africa. And so much else. So
I would never judge anybody that does it. I’m just really happy that at this point in my life, I found a company that I’m
so proud to endorse. But I think it’s important not to judge anyone’s reasons for doing
whatever they’re doing.

What’s your favorite place outdoors?

Kenya honestly changed me. I’ve never felt so insignificant—but in a positive way. I realized that this land does not belong to us. You see these giant, roaming animals, and you’re like, “No, this is theirs.”

Emmanuelle Chriqui is one of the most beautiful women on TV, consistently landing on “best-dressed” and “hot” lists (she was named AskMen’s Most Desirable Woman of 2010) — but the Canadian babe doesn’t have a magic beauty wand to explain her good looks.

Instead, she credits good genes and and a natural beauty routine for her ever-youthful appearance.

“Honestly, a lot of is genetic! It’s for sure, ‘Thanks mom, thanks dad! I have olive skin too, which helps a lot,” she said.

Born in Montreal and raised in Toronto, the Moroccan-Jewish beauty rose to fame for her role as Sloan on HBO’s ‘Entourage’ and as Lorelei Martins on ‘The Mentalist.’ She’s now the face of Mineral Fusion, a small cosmetics line that boasts all-natural ingredients, and is an activist with Raise Hope for Congo, an organization which brings awareness to the atrocities happening to the women and girls of the Congo.

StyleList Canada sat down with Emannuelle to chat about her best-kept beauty secrets, aging in Hollywood and why she’s a proponent of all-natural beauty.

How would you describe your signature beauty look?

I think there are two. There’s a more glamorous smokey eye I do for awards shows and red carpets, and then there’s the totally natural, bronzy, glowy mascara and nude lip I do most of the time when I’m not at an event.

How do you achieve a naturally bronzed look on the go?

I’m really super tan to begin with so it doesn’t take that much! I just use blush and bronzer. Mineral Fusion has a press powder foundation that I love that I use, that I generally don’t put all over — I just do the areas that need it. I prefer to let my skin breathe, unless of course I’m on a red carpet, in which case that’s a different story! Then, it’s just mascara and lipstick or gloss, and I’m good to go.

Has your beauty look changed over the years?

Yes. I used to struggle a lot with my skin and I would always hide it. I also didn’t have the right colour of foundation (which was terrible!). Looking back now I’m like, oh my god what was I thinking?

But now I think, as you age, less is more. If you wear a lot of makeup and you’re powdering, it goes in the lines and creases and it makes you feel tired and older, whereas if you keep your face cleaner it looks fresher and more youthful.

Do you have any anti-aging beauty tips?

Honestly, a lot of it is genetic. Thanks mom, thanks dad! Both my parents look very young for their age. I think having olive skin also helps a lot. I’m really oily, so I look at my girlfriends who are slathering on all these amazing products and I’m like, “I’d get a pimple!” I could never do that.

What’s your natural beauty secret?

There’s a beautiful facial mist and toner that I love to use, either after I wash my face or in the middle of the day, or even as just a refresher on my skin on the plane. It just hydrates really well, which is super important.

Why is ‘natural’ so important to you?

I’m a big believer that you need to treat yourself and the planet with the utmost respect. So I think what you eat, what you put on your skin, how you treat the earth, how you treat others — it’s just really important, and you have to be gentle.

Are there any big Hollywood names whose beauty whose beauty looks you admire?

I love Jennifer Lopez. I think I relate to the fact that she has olive skin, and she just has that sun-kissed glow down. It looks effortless and clean and it never looks caked on. I haven’t seen it in person, but certainly in photographs it looks amazing to me.

You used to live in Toronto, and you’ve been in L.A. for a while now. Has that changed your beauty routine at all?

Oh for sure, just based on weather alone. In California everything is so dry all the time. I’ve been living there for most of my adult life — almost 15 years — so any habit that I have now is borne out of living in California for sure.

California is so progressive in so many ways. Everything is easy to acquire whether its organic food, or all the new trends -– it’s so at your fingertips. So I definitely choose to play in that sandbox!

Do you have any worst fashion moments where you look back on the red carpet and you’re just like, ugh, what was I thinking?

Definitely. There was a moment in time when I got back from Brazil and I had these cargo pants that I thought were the coolest thing ever. And I wore them with a cropped shirt so I had my full tummy exposed. And I didn’t realize that my top was see-through. I was posing, feeling like I looked amazing. Now I look back at that picture and think, “How did no one tell me!”

But there were so many things — it wasn’t even just the see-through top. I was also wearing earrings that were wayyy too big. It wasn’t cute. It was very funny.

What’s a beauty trend you hate?

Definitely a beauty thing that I don’t get to save my life is when people insist on putting too dark of a blush on the apple of their cheeks. We’re not 12. I mean, it’s very strange to me. I don’t like that look when I see it.

Your mom studied to be an esthetician. Did she influence you at all with your feelings about makeup and beauty?

Definitely. I always saw her getting ready, and she was very coquettish. She always doing her makeup and her nails and getting dressed up — you know, she was never casual. So think I got most of that from her. I’m actually very casual by comparison, but the small coquettish side of me is definitely all from my mom.
